Welcome to AP Environmental ScienceThis class is my favorite class to teach. You will quickly catch on to the fact that I have a real passion for the natural world and a strong commitment to green our current modern lifestyle. There are a few goals for my APES class.
One goal is to prepare you to pass the AP Exam. The APES exam has the second highest fail rate of any AP exam. It covers a huge breadth of material and that can be very challenging to students. This past year I had more students take the exam than ever before. We also had the highest average score yet - more than half of my students got 3 or higher. |
Another goal of the APES class is to educate you about some very important environmental issues that our world is facing now and will face in the near future. I personally believe there are many alternatives to how we use resources that, if promoted to a large number of people, can make an enormous difference in the quality of life for future generations.
A third important goal of APES is to educate students in problem solving. We work on quarter or semester long projects that require you to be creative, think outside the box, use people and tools and resources, and create a polished product that maybe evaluated by professional people.
A minor goal of our class is to continue work on the garden/food forest , greenhouse and pond area outside our classroom. It's a rare opportunity at AHS to get your hands dirty and learn some VERY practical skills!
Another goal is to generate interest and build out Solar Cup Challenge boat building team. The competition involves engineering, wood working, electrical and mechanical systems understanding as well as publicity, promotions, and educational components. It's one of the few opportunities on campus to do real-world problem solving and build specific job-related skills. AND it's a lot of fun! Ask me for more details!
